Sylvia

Greg is a man of middle age, a restless empty-nester, tired of his job in finance, looking for meaning in his life. Sylvia is an exuberant and beautiful lab/poodle mix, astray in Central Park, looking for a new home. When they meet, it is love at first sight. But his wife Kate, a busy rising star in the public school system, is looking forward to some independence now that the couple no longer has children to care for, and is less than thrilled by the clever and coquettish canine who jumps, slobbers, sits on her couch, and takes Greg’s attention away from his marriage. Wandering the streets of Manhattan with Sylvia by his side, Greg feels like he has connected to a deeper, primal, more natural side of the world. Sylvia supports these poetic musings, but can rarely focus on them for long, being more interested in flipping off the neighborhood cat, or flirting with Bowser at the dog park. Sylvia exerts such a charismatic pull that Kate’s friends are appalled, the marriage counselor advocates divorce and euthanasia, and even Greg’s new dog-owner friend warns him of the splintering effect a dog can have on the relationship between husband and wife. It is only when Greg is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice that Kate is able to see Sylvia not as a threat, but as a new member of her family. A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia is a smart, silly, sophisticated, and occasionally salty comedy about relationships, nature, and growing older.

The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant devise a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history, bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime for Hitler"), hiring a director, and raising the money in efforts to pull off the perfect con. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends!

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

8:00 PM
Sat, Apr 11
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead reimagines Shakespeare’s Hamlet from the perspective of two minor characters who suddenly find themselves at the center of an absurd, unsettling universe. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are summoned to the court of Elsinore but are largely unaware of why they are there, what is expected of them, or even which of them is which. As major events from Hamlet occur just offstage, the pair struggle to make sense of their purpose, identity, and fate. The play blends sharp wit, wordplay, and physical comedy with deeper philosophical questions about free will, mortality, and the nature of reality. Time behaves strangely, logic collapses without warning, and meaning is constantly questioned. A traveling troupe of Players drifts in and out of the story, reflecting—and mocking—the inevitability of performance, death, and repetition. At once hilarious and haunting, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is a play about being trapped inside a story you don’t understand, desperately trying to find significance before the ending arrives.

This historical drama—developed with support from a TACA New Works grant—marks the culmination of a year-long creative journey and honors the enduring legacy of a visionary artist whose influence helped shape Soul Rep from its earliest days. Inspired by the life of Stephanie St. Clair, Harlem’s legendary “Queen of the Numbers” and one of the nation’s first Black female millionaires, Madam Queen brings to the stage a powerful portrait of ambition, resilience, and survival in 1920s Harlem. Through a bold and richly layered narrative, the play explores race, power, identity, and the cost of claiming space in a world determined to deny it. Presented as a fully staged production, Madam Queen reflects diannetucker’s expansive storytelling style—blending history, spectacle, and emotional depth. The production stands as both a celebration of Black women’s leadership and an artistic tribute to a playwright whose voice continues to resonate. diannetucker was a prolific North Texas writer, playwright, lyricist, and storyteller who served as an early champion of Soul Rep Theatre Company and a mentor to its co-founders. In 1985, she founded Dallas Drama Company, a nonprofit theatre that operated for a decade and served as a formative training ground for two of Soul Rep’s founding members. Her commitment to cultivating Black artists and stories left an indelible mark on the Dallas arts community. Born in Marshall, Texas, diannetucker earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University. Her creative life extended beyond the stage; in 2009, she co-founded Tucker’s Blues in Deep Ellum, a beloved venue dedicated to celebrating local blues musicians and Black cultural expression. diannetucker passed away in 2022 following a battle with cancer. Madam Queen stands as her final artistic offering—an extraordinary work that ensures her voice, vision, and legacy live on.

Anything can happen on live TV. And one night, it did. It’s 1958, and Jack Paar hosts the hottest late-night talk-show on television. His favorite guest? Character actor, pianist and wild card Oscar Levant. Famous for his witty one-liners, Oscar has a favorite: “There’s a fine line between genius and insanity; I have erased this line.” Tonight, Oscar will prove just that when he appears live on national TV in an episode that Paar’s audience—and the rest of America—won’t soon forget. Good Night, Oscar explores the nexus of humor and heartbreak, the ever-dwindling distinction between exploitation and entertainment, and the high cost of baring one’s soul for public consumption.
